Our Trip to al-Bireh and Ramallah

Here are some photos of our trip to the Ramallah area. Ramallah is about 30 minutes from Jerusalem directly, but we drove on back roads to avoid checkpoints. We then arrived at al-Bireh, a town right next to Jerusalem, for a meeting with the General Union of Palestinian Women. In the meeting, we heard a presentation on the Wall and Israeli settlements from Dr. Michael Tourazi, and heard from a former political prisoner, the mother of three political prisoners, and a woman mayor, among others.

After our meeting, and lunch with Palestinian women, we were taken to visit Yassir Arafat's tomb, which is also in Ramallah.

Unforgettable Experience (English/Espanol)

It was an unforgettable experience going to the infamous Qalandia checkpoint with so many of us women singing old songs and weaving signs with slogans against the Ocupation and for peace. Italien women sang Bella Ciao and we followed, the story of the single partisan being killed for freedom and buried under the shadow of a beautiful tree appeal all of us. Someone sang the International and the Palestinians sellers sang as well. "We shall overcome" was also a common song for all, the struggle and the march today bears traces of other struggles and other fights. The memory of the ones who fought for the Black liberation, for the rights of the workers and for the rights of the women and the oppressed is the fuel we need to keep our own struggles alive. But we should never forget we fight for joy and we should never allow sadness to be related to our name.

Fue una experiencia inolvidable ir al tristemente conocido control de Qalandia con tantas mujeres cantando viejas canciones de resistencia y llevando carteles con slogans en contra de la ocupacion y por la paz. Las italianas cantaban Bella Ciao y las seguiamos, la historia de un guerillero muerto por la libertad y enterrado a la sombra de un bello arbol nos convoca tambien a nosotros.
Algunas cantaban la Internacional y los vendedores palestinos la cantaban tambien. Cantamos We shall overcome, que nos hacia recordar de que la lucha y la marcha hoy llevan trazos de otras memorias y de otras luchas.
La memoria de los que pelearon por la liberacion de los negros en Estados Unidos, por los derechos de los trabajadores y por los de las mujeres y por los de los oprimidos, es el combustible que necesitamos para alimentar y nutriy y mantener vivas nuestras propias luchas.
Pero no debemos olvidad de que peleamos por la alegria y que jamas la tristeza debe ser unida a nuestro nombre.

True Happiness (English/Espanol)

I am not staying in the same hotels within the Old City as most of the women for the conference are. So each morning I have been taking a service (shared taxi) to the Seven Arches Hotel to join the events of the day. Today, however we were meeting near the Old City and I could enjoy a brief walk instead. As I walked from my youth hostel to join the WIB group, first past the Knights' Palace and then toward the Gloria Hotel, I was slowly filled with the energy of each small group of women I joined with. Watching a few women here and there, all speaking in different languages joining into a larger and larger group, finally spreading to fill the width of the narrow, smooth stone streets of the Old City was one of the best moments of my day. The energy continued to build as we first entered our buses, then traveled the crowded and narrow excuse for a road near to Qalandia checkpoint. As we exited our buses and gathered into a laughing, chattering group of amazing women, many holding signs, "End the Occupation" written in Arabic, English and Hebrew, I was filled with true happiness. The first time I can honestly say that I've felt this emotion since arriving to this conflict-torn country nearly two months ago. Despite the fact that media around the world and within Israel itself ignore the atrocities of the Occupation and silence the voice of the Palestinians on a daily basis, today at Qalandia checkpoint, the soldiers, the settlers, and most importantly, the Palestinians heard and saw women from across the globe supporting the struggle for a just peace. Yo no me estoy quedandome en los mismos hoteles de la Ciudad Vieja como muchas de las mujeres de la conferencia. Quiere decir que cada manana tengo que tomar un taxi compartido al hotel de los 7 Arcos para participar en los hechos de ese dia. Hoy, de todas maneras, nos ibamos a encontrar cerca de la Ciudad Vieja y pense que podia disfrutar de una corta caminata. Cuando iba caminando desde el hostal para la juventud en donde vivo para unirme al grupo de Mujeres de Negro, y pase primero por el hotel Knight's Palace y despues por el Gloria me iba llenando lentamente de la energia de cada uno de los pequenos grupos de mujeres que encontraba. Ver a unas mujeres por ahi y otras por alli, todas hablando en diferentes idiomas y formando un grupo cada vez mayor hasta terminar diseminandose hasta cubrir las estrechas calles de piedra de la Ciudad Vieja, fue uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida.
La energia siguio aumentando hasta que entramos a los autobuses y recorrimos el camino pobre y lleno de gente cerca del control de Qalandia. Cuando bajamos de los autobuses formamos un grupo de mujeres riendo, asombradas, muchas llevando carteles que decian "Terminar con la Ocupacion", en hebreo, en arabe y en ingles, me senti llena de verdadera felicidad.
Es la primera vez que honestamente puedo decir que tuve esa sensacion desde que llegue a este pais tan conflictivo hace dos meses.
A pesar de que los medios de comunicacion del mundo y dentro de Israel mismo ignoran las atrocidades de la ocupacion y silencian la voz de los palestinos todos los dias, hoy en el control de Qalandia, los soldados, los colonos y mas importante, los palestinos, oyeron y vieron mujeres de todas partes del planeta apoyando la lucha por una paz justa.

Voices are Raised (English)

Greetings to friends in Sheffield, UK and all over the world. There are four of us here from Sheffield. I'll briefly say a few things that I've learnt from the extraordinary experience of coming to East Jerusalem, visiting Ramallah and standing in solidarity with Palestinian people in the occupied territories. Often, I switch off when there is news from this region. The news is usually bad, and it gets worse. Coming here, I have seen many things I didn't expect: the resilience, courage, patience and humour of the Palestinian people in the face of daily restrictions and humiliations; the courage of the Israeli peace activists, refuseniks, young men and women who put their bodies in front of Israeli army tanks, using their privileged position to continually resist the occupation; the reality of the massive Apartheid Wall that snakes across the land, making life near-impossible for Palestinians and resulting in the impossiblity for Israelis and Palestinians to continue to meet face to face. But many voices are being raised in non-violent resistance on every side to say clearly 'We will not accept this imprisonment, this militarisation, we will not be prevented from continuing dialogue and reconciliation.'

We're sorry that there were no posts for so long. The international women of the conference spend yesterday visiting Ramallah, al Bireh, and Bil'in in the West Bank, while women with passports toured the Wall and settlements in Jerusalem. This morning, all women, Israeli, Palestinian, and international held a demonstration at the Qalandia checkpoint. We will have photos and reports from all of these on the blog very shortly.

Expanding my mind (english)

Since arriving in Jerusalem for the WiB conference, it is natural that I carried with me a sort of baggaged of previous notions. Even though my luggage didn't come for a few days, this "baggage" was carried in my heart, through customs, past security and into a city filled with diversity and stuggle. However, since the start of the conference I have unpacked and found that what I believed so deeply and thought I understood was mearly the tip of the iceberg. Under it all, there is a whole lot more to learn and teach about the stuggle of women and the situation in Palestine/Israel specifically.

In the days, months, years from now, I hope that I can at least begin to communicate the pain that is here and share my experiences with those in the U.S. and my fellow college students. I am in debt to the women here and their openness to share such a personal struggle. More themes are starting to cement and I feel empowered to speak. Even though there are several countries, we are just one voice here...one hope...in this healing process.

Some thoughts/Algunas reflexiones

To be in Jerusalem, a holy city for three religions, is a kind of challenge for all us raised in intolerance and no respect for the other's belief. I was raised by German nuns in Uruguay, South America's tiniest country, created by the English diplomacy as a buffer between the two mighty giants, Argentine and Brazil. My ancestors were Italian and Spaniards and the land was populated by European settlers.
Nobody cared about the "others" who inhabitated the land before. They were just savages, the "Other", nobody wanted to know who they were, they were expelled, killed, forgotten.
The German nuns raised me as a racist, as a settler, as a fundamentalist Catholic. We were supposed to love the Inquisition, to hate the Protestants and the Jews. The Arabs, nobody cared, there was not one Arab who lived in Uruguay, and if they came, we called them "Turks", as they are called in Spain for the "Moors", los "moros".
And the Blacks? Nobody cared either, they were servants, janitors, nightwatchers, really the "Others".
But I was lucky, in some way, when I was released from the cloister after 11 years education, I discovered the world and the activism and the struggle. I was jailed and spent 4 years in prison and was deported to Sweden, where I have been living for 28 years now.
In the jail and in the exile I discovered myself as an "Other", I was an other for the soldiers who beat us, for the officers who tortured us, in Sweden I was an other, a foreigner, with the wrong accent, with the wrong color of hair.
I did the painful discovery in those days here, in Jerusalem, listening to the Jews and the Arabs discuss the land the history which they share. It seems we need always an "Other" to blame and to hate.
We should create together, Jews, Muslims and Christians, an "Other" to love and to share with, our brother or sister in pain and in joy.

Estar en Jerusalen, una ciudad sagrada para tres religiones, es un desafio para alguien educado en la intolerancia y en la falta de respeto para las creencias de los otros. Naci en el Uruguay, el pais mas pequeno de America Latina, creado por la diplomacia inglesa como un tapon entre los dos vecinos gigantes, Argentina y Brasil. Mis maestras fueron monjas alemanas y mis ancestros fueron colonos europeos, Italianos y Espanoles.
Nadie se preocupo de los "otros" que habitaban la tierra antes. Eran solo salvajes, el "Otro" que nadie queria conocer o reconocer como un igual. Fueron expulsados, asesinados y olvidados.
Las monjas alemanas me educaron como racista, como una colonizadora, como una catolica fundamentalista. Se suponia que teniamos que amar la Inquisicion, odiar los protestantes y los judios. De los arabes no se preocupaba nadie, ninguno vivia en el Uruguay y si venian los llamabamos despectivamente los "turcos", como en Espana se los llama los "moros". Y los negros? A nadie le importaban, eran sirvientes, plomeros, porteros, verdaderamente los "Otros".
Pero tuve suerte, de alguna manera, cuando terminaron mis anos de convento, despues de 11 anos de educacion, descubri el mundo, el activismo y la lucha. Estuve en la carcel por mi oposicion a los militares y pase cuatro anos en cuarteles y carceles dirigidas por el ejercito. Fui el "otro" para los soldados que nos vapuleaban concienzudamente, para los oficiales que nos torturaban.
En Suecia, adonde me deportaron y donde llevo viviendo 28 anos, he sido tambien el "otro", una extranjera, con el acento peculiar cuando hablo sueco, con el color de pelo equivocado.
En estos dias en Jerusalen, escuchando a judios y a palestinos hablar de la tierra y de la herencia que comparten, pense que siempre necesitamos al "otro" para odiar y para culpar.
Deberiamos crear juntos y junta, Judios, Musulmanes y Cristianos, hombres y mujeres, un "otro" para amar y para compartir, un hermano o una hermana en el dolor y en la alegria.

This email contains instructions for how to access both video and audio of the conference, live and later, in an archive. Unfortunately, this information is not yet on the website, but it is on the blog at wibjerusalem2005.blogspot.com.
Video of the conference will be available live during the actual conference. After that, it will be archived (available for later viewing). You access the video at

When video of a conference session will be available, there will be a link to it. Unfortunately, video is only available in English. We will try to post translations and summaries if we can in other languages.

Puno osoba nije do sada koristilo blog na internetu. U prilogu su kratke instrukcije. Nove poruke koji se zovu “posts” će se pojavljivati nekoliko puta tokom dana za vrijeme konferencije i po jedna svakih par dana poslije. Poruke će imati datum na vrhu u lijevom uglu. Da dobijete listu poruka vidite desnu stranu stranice. Tamo, ispod “About me” (O meni) i “Links” (Linkovi) sekcija naćićete sekciju pod nazivom “Previous Posts” (Ranije poruke). U desnom uglu nalaze se dvije sekcije pod nazivima “How to Use this Blog” (Kako se koristi blog) i “Welcome to the Blog for Women Resist War and Occupation” (Dobro došle na blog Žena koje se suprotstavljaju ratu i okupaciji). Cómo utilizar este “blog” (dietario electrónico interactivo): Español

Muchas personas todavía no han utilizado un “blog” en internet. Aquí hay algunas breves instrucciones. Aparecerán nuevos mensajes, llamados “posts” o correos, probablemente unas cuantas veces al día durante el encuentro, y uno cada unos cuantos días después. Los mensajes tienen su fecha en la esquina superior izquierda. Para tener una lista de mensajes, mirad al lado derecho de esta página. Allí, debajo de la sección “Acerca de mí” y la sección de “Links” hay una sección llamada “Mensajes Anteriores”. Ahora precisamente hay dos , “Cómo utilizar este Blog” y “Bienvenidas al Blog de las Mujeres que Resisten la Guerra y la Ocupación”. Si clicáis en el link de un correo allí, veréis el correo entero en una página, junto con todos los comentarios a ese correo. Sin embargo, si os mantenéis en esta página principal, solamente veréis los correos. En la parte de abajo, en el lado izquierdo de cada correo de esta página principal, hay un link que dice el número de comentarios de ese correo. Clicad en ese link para mandar un comentario. En la página de comentarios, tenéis la oportunidad de registraros para que podáis mandar el correo con vuestro nombre, pero no necesitáis registraros si no queréis. Para registraros, clicad en el “Sign Up Here” del lado derecho de la página de comentarios, y rellenad el cuestionario .Únicamente tenéis que llenar la primera página para mandar comentarios. Es de esperar que habrá montones de comentarios para cada correo!

Aparte de los puntos técnicos, dejadme explicar más de lo que está sucediendo aquí. Este blog será usado para proporcionar una conexión entre mujeres que asistan al encuentro de Jerusalén y mujeres que no puedan venir. Las mujeres asistentes escribirán correos, párrafos cortos de su experiencia, algo que han aprendido, u otros temas. Los correos tienen los títulos cortos en esta página principal; y sus encabezamientos son grandes. Los correos pueden mandarse por alguien que tenga la contraseña de la página, que yo (Emily) tengo. Cualquier mujer del encuentro puede ponerlo, pero de este modo sabemos que los correos son todos de Mujeres de Negro, y otras feministas, mujeres contra la guerra, para que no podamos ser suplantadas tan fácilmente. Cualquiera en el mundo puede hacer un comentario, clicando en el link de comentarios por debajo del correo. Por favor haced que vuestros comentarios sean educados y fraternales. Si se hacen comentarios de odio, pueden ser borrados por mí. Pero el desacuerdo es bueno, siempre que sea respetuoso. Si diferimos entre nosotras, en este blog, está muy bien.

Algunas distinciones técnicas: este blog se ha creado utilizando Blogger, un servicio gratuito de la web que permite a quien sea, hacer un blog. En ese sitio, hay una sección dedicada a las sesiones del encuentro, fotografías y la exhibición política en Jerusalén, y un espacio para mandar mensajes escritos al encuentro. El blog es únicamente una parte del encuentro online, aunque es el más interactivo. Por favor id a www.womeninblack.org/jerusalem.html para ver que más hay online en este encuentro.

Many people have not yet used a blog on the internet. Here are some brief instructions. New messages, called "posts" will appear, probably a few times a day during the conference, and one every few days before then. Messages have their date in the top left corner. To get a list of messages, look on the right side of this page. There, beneath the "About Me" section and the "Links" section is a section called "Previous Posts." Right now there are two of them, "How to Use this Blog" and "Welcome to the Blog for Women Resist War and Occupation." If you click on a link to a post there, you will see the post in a page by itself, along with all of the comments on that post. However, if you stay on this main page, you will see just the posts. In the bottom left corner of each post on this main page, there is a link that says the number of comments on this post. Click on this link to post a comment. In the comments page, you have a chance to register, so you can post with your name, but you do not need to register if you don't want to. To register, click on the "Sign Up here" link on the right side of the comments page, and fill out the form. You only have to fill out the first page to post comments. Hopefully there will be lots of comments to every post!

Beyond technical points, let me expain more what is going on here. This blog will be used to provide a connection between women attending the conference in Jerusalem and women who are not. Women who are attending will write posts, short paragraphs on their experience, something they learned, or other topics. Posts are short main entries on this main page; they are the type with big headings. Posts can only be made by someone with the password to the page, which I (Emily) have. Any woman at the conference who wants to make a post can, but this way we know that the posts are all from Women in Black and other feminist, anti-war women, so we can't be hijacked. Anyone in the world can make a comment, by clicking on the comments link beneath the post. Please keep your comments polite and sisterly. If any hate-comments are made, they may be deleted by me. But, disagreement is good, as long as it is respectful. If we differ among each other, that is OK on this blog.

For some technical distinctions: this blog was created using Blogger, a free web service that allows anyone to make a blog. It is connected to the Women in Black International Meeting that is happening in Jerusalem this summer, which is called "Women Resist War and Occupation." The main international Women in Black webpage is www.womeninblack.org. On that site, there is a section devoted to this conference, where there will be audio and video files of the conference sessions, photographs of the political exhibit in Jerusalem, and a space to send written messages to the conference. The blog is only one part of the online conference, although it is the most interactive. Please do go to www.womeninblack.org/jerusalem.html to see what else is
